Recently Framed - 1910 Heirloom Christening Gown
This beautiful christening gown, from 1910 belongs to the granddaughter of it's original owner. The project took over a week of design, steaming, ironing, fluffing, pinning, hand sewing, and of course custom framing. Framing a garment poses some challenges. The material can be either too flat or too wavy, it can be crooked or askew from age or delicate and fragile. It was important to use framing methods that were reversible, just in case the gown was to be worn by the next generation. Thankfully Karen’s experienced hands and knowledge from years of working with fabrics and sewing brought this gown life.
A simple white shadowbox moulding was used and paired with a warm taupe mat. The colour we chose adds contrast between the dress and the frame. The pale pink in the corners gives an extra element of femininity to the piece. Art Glass Anti Reflective with 99% UV Protection was used to help preserve the fabric from fading, while making it appear like there is no glass at all. This heirloom gown was so rewarding in the end. |
