Float vs Wrap Around Frames on Donna Andrewchuk's Paintings

The Art Exchange has framed a number of Donna Andreychuk's paintings in both floater and traditional mouldings.

Float Frames
Elegant and sleek in appearance, the floater frame create a gap between the canvas or panel and the moulding. The benefit of using a floater frame is none of the image is cut off.

Wrap Around Frames
Paintings done on board or canvas can be framed without glass with a traditional wrap around moulding.

The benefit of using a traditional frame is it covers any unfinished and/or damaged edges. We offer a large selection of traditional mouldings to choose from in a wide variety of styles.

Choosing the Right Glass for your Artwork

Our designer, Al and Meredith, framed two artworks for our current exhibition at Westland Gallery. Both paintings were done by artist Sarah Hillock and illustrate animals, both domestic and wild. Sarah typically paints on mylar (a thin clear plastic material); we framed two of her artworks to showcase how these artworks could be done. Our consultants treated the mylar like paper by adhered it to a kool tac backing to add stability. We then spaced the glass off the artworks creating a gap and added protection from light and moisture build-up. We used this opportunity to feature the difference between our most commonly used glazes; Regular and Art Glass. The photos above were taken at same spot within 5 minutes of each other, the difference in clarity is clear.

Shadowbox Displays - Framing Unique Mentos that Hold Memories

Picture
Bridal Bouquet

Our framers had the honor of designing  a wedding bouquet display. A florist had already done the prep work of drying, rearranging and attaching the flowers to mat board before we added the finishing framing touches. Our framers create a shadowbox and added colour with inner matting. A rustic dark wooden frame was the final piece to the puzzle. At The Art Exchange love creating custom keepsakes. As this example shows, framing is a wonderful way to preserve and display objects that provoke memories of special life events.

Wildflower Framed

A beautiful collection of dried flowers is simply framed. The owner requested a double glass without matting design and we were up for the challenge. The issue of this project was that the plant stems and flowers were a variety of depths, so squeezing the objects between glass would not work. After testing a few different adhesives we attached the flowers to the glass with a small amount of clear silicone carefully placed on the back of the plant to hide it from plain view. The two panes of glass were spaced apart from one another and second spacer holds the piece together in the back. The completed design will be brought to life with the colour of the client's walls shining through.

Telling a Story Through a Collection of Objects

We had the privilege of framing a collection of items from a client’s father to commemorate his service. The challenge of this project was creating a cohesive layout to provide a clear narrative. As designers, we wanted the viewer's eye to travel around the piece and gather knowledge through the different artifacts included. Balancing the number and scale of the objects and then dividing the piece into three sections created visual order. Once the layout was sorted, a grey tweed fabric mat was chosen to reference the metal while contrasting with the bronze and gold. The colours of the ribbons and the veteran’s vest were echoed by thin blue inner mat. A wide rich brown frame added an element of warmth and age with its rustic unfinished edge. This truly was a heart-warming project as communicated by the finished piece.

Hidden Repair

As framers our goal is always to make the artwork look it's very best for the wall. Our framing consultants generally approach this by pick complimentary matting and frames, but last week we had the small challenge of repairing before framing. Our goal was to conceal some holes in the paper. In the past we have used dark foamcore/backing to fixing this problem but the rice paper was so thin that the black backing was changing the colour of the image as a whole. So we did a more delicate technique by cutting mirrored shapes of the missing bits with acid free craft tissue. The pieces were then adhered to the backing and not the piece. The finished framing showcases the print in its best form without tampering with the piece itself. At The Art Exchange we love the challenges and problem solving that comes with custom framing.
