Statement Shadowbox Designs
The Art Exchange has proudly been creating framing design for over twenty years. In that time we have worked on some unusual objects including Olympic ski uniforms, ceramic sculptures, delicate 3D paper art, feathers and even small taxidermy. We have come up with three inspiring looks for unique objects showcasing how custom framing can create a statement artwork out of your favourite mementos while helping preserving them for long term enjoyment.
1. Outgrown baby shoes
In the past we have created shadow boxes for a christening gowns but for this design we decided to take a smaller baby item and frame it. The pair of shoes are enhanced by a gender neutral design with warm white matting and matching white frame. We wanted to create a keepsake that would evolve with the family from baby's room to part of a family photo wall in a hallway or living room. This creative gift for any expectant parents can be enjoyed long after the baby out grows it. As framers, we always want to create designs that be appreciated in the long term with quality materials.

2. Capturing a Moment in Time with Family Heirlooms
Framing allows one to display objects that are near and dear to the heart and convey a story. This shadowbox captures a moment by pairing an old wedding photograph with tangible items in the image. We chose a sink mat to add texture and to echo the luxurious feeling of the pearl necklace. A simple glossy black moulding adds a little sparkle to this piece without taking away from the items framed. The symmetrical layout pulls the focus to the center, the most important framed element, the wedding photo. This design shows how framing can create a statement wall piece out of family heirlooms. |
3. Theatrical Tableau in a Shadow Box
This design takes an antique pop-up card from the fable of Little Red Riding Hood and uses a 4" deep shadowbox to frame it. The rich ox blood coloured matting adds visual spacing between the ornate gold frame and the detailed visuals of the card. Hidden beneath the matting are built up walls designed to create depth between the image and the glass so that image is not squeezed in. Using anti reflective glass would help to preserve the work from light damage and make it appear that there was no glazing used at all. We also recommend for using an art light for an artwork that has layers and depth so that it can be properly lit without fuss. The Art Exchange has a wireless rechargeable lighting option available in store. Similar looks could be created with pop books or 3D paper cut outs. This provides a great option for a kid's rooms or a book nook in your home. Click the button below to see more designs of books framed. |
4. Team Spirit Shadow Box
Want to show your team spirit in your home? A jersey shadow box is a great addition to any man or woman's sports cave. The Art Exchange has hundreds of mats to choose from so your team's colours can be used in the framing. Double, triple or quadruple mats, the options are limitless. Items like sports cards, game tickets, signed photos or sports equipment can also be added to these displays.

5. Kitchen Ornaments
Interior home design magazines have been displaying plates on walls for years but our design takes this idea to a new level by featuring a place setting, a collection of utensils and a pair of salt and pepper shakers. For these looks we first laid out the set as it would be on a table to measure the space and overall size. Then complementary matting was chosen, using neutral colours for the more refined designs and pops of colour for the bolder collections. Several things had to be considered when picking the moulding, the depth of the frame and then what shapes, colours, or styles would work with the other elements. From antique to modern, the examples show how custom framing can add a new layer to this interior design idea. Perfect for a kitchen or dining room, it's a unique way to feature your collection.
